Although there is plenty to do in Port O’Connor here are some other options in the surrounding area. Most of these places are roughly within an hour’s drive from POC.
Aransas National Wildlife Refuge – The Refuge Complex is comprised of over 115,000 acres including the Blackjack Peninsula (Aransas proper), Matagorda Island, Myrtle Foester Whitmire, Tatton, and Lamar units. These areas provide vital resting, feeding, wintering, and nesting grounds for migratory birds and native Texas wildlife
Goose Island State Park - Although located on Aransas Bay, there is no swimming area at this park. The shoreline is comprised of concrete bulkhead, oyster shell, mud flat, and marsh grass. The main recreational activities are camping, excellent birding, and fishing (the park participates in the “Loan A Tackle Program” and lends out fishing tackle to visitors.) Other activities include picnicking, boating (motors allowed), nature study, wildlife observation, and photography. Tours: Guided nature hikes are held year round. Guided birding tours are held from January through April.
Calhoun County Museum – The mission of the Calhoun County Museum is the acquisition, documentation, preservation, study and exhibition of artifacts relating to the history, natural history and maritime history of Calhoun County. This is a great place to learn about the history of the area!
Twin Dolphin Theater – Located in Port Lavaca this cinema has two screens and offers the latest movies from the big screen.
Riverside Park and Rose Garden Victoria – Located on the west side of Victoria, this 562-acre park is bordered by more than 4 miles of the Guadalupe River. The park offers golfing, The Victoria Memorial Rose Garden, scenic areas, and picnic tables with bbq pits.
Victoria Zoo – The Texas Zoo connects people with wildlife from Texas and the rest of the world; inspires caring for nature; and advances conservation through education, recreation, science and action.
Victoria Mall – Great shopping with stores including Best Buy, Dillard’s, Old Navy and a Movie Theater.
Texas State Aquarium – This wonderful aquarium located in Corpus Christi has continually changing exhibits including a dolphin show, sea turtles, and many fish from the Gulf of Mexico and beyond!
USS Lexington Museum on the Bay – Imaginations run wild aboard the USS LEXINGTON. The sights, the sounds are so real and so intense you become a part of the story the second you step foot aboard this World War II era aircraft carrier. There’s an adventure around every corner as you make your way through the maze of tunnels and ladders.
